About the Role - Ekam-In is looking for a strong ELA Teacher / English Language Arts Specialist who can teach across US Common Core (CCSS), CBSE and ICSE curricula.

The role goes beyond grammar and textbook completion. The teacher should develop students' ability to read closely, think critically, write effectively, analyze texts, communicate clearly, build vocabulary, and use language accurately.

Key Responsibilities

Reading & Literature

  • Reading comprehension, close reading and inferential thinking
  • Main idea, theme, character, setting, plot and author's purpose
  • Textual evidence and evidence-based analysis
  • Literary devices, figurative language, symbolism, tone, mood and point of view
  • Analysis of literary and informational texts
  • Research-based and critical reading

Writing

  • Narrative, descriptive, creative and personal writing
  • Informative, expository, analytical and argumentative writing
  • Literary analysis, research writing and evidence-based responses
  • Paragraph and essay construction
  • Teach the complete writing process: Plan → Draft → Revise → Edit → Proofread

Grammar & Language

  • Strong command of grammar, sentence structure, clauses, phrases, tenses, agreement, modifiers, voice, punctuation and syntax
  • Teach grammar in context and develop students' sentence variety, precision and stylistic control

Vocabulary

  • Context clues, word roots, prefixes/suffixes, academic and domain-specific vocabulary
  • Connotation, denotation, figurative meaning, nuance and word choice

Curriculum Adaptation

  • CCSS: Close Reading → Evidence → Inference → Analysis → Argument
  • CBSE: Comprehension → Competency → Grammar → Writing → Literature → Examination Application
  • ICSE: Literature → Language → Interpretation → Composition → Analytical Response

The teacher must adapt lesson planning, depth, pace, terminology and assessment according to the student's curriculum and individual needs.

Assessment & Student Development

  • Conduct diagnostic assessments and identify learning gaps
  • Create individualized learning plans
  • Prepare quizzes, comprehension tests, grammar/vocabulary assessments, writing tasks and benchmark assessments
  • Track reading comprehension, writing quality, grammar, vocabulary, evidence use, analytical depth and independent thinking
  • Provide specific, actionable feedback to students

Teaching Methodology

Use a combination of:

  • Explicit instruction and guided practice
  • Close reading and text annotation
  • Discussion and Socratic questioning
  • Think-alouds and graphic organizers
  • Writing workshops
  • Independent and collaborative practice
  • Formative assessment and projects where appropriate

The teacher should be able to maintain strong engagement during 60-minute online classes.

Online Teaching Skills

Comfortable using:

  • Screen sharing and digital whiteboards
  • Text annotation
  • Google Docs or equivalent platforms
  • Digital worksheets and presentations
  • Online assessments and student records

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in English, English Literature, Education, Linguistics or related field
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Strong grammar, composition and literary analysis skills
  • Experience teaching school-age students
  • Strong online teaching skills
  • Ability to create worksheets and assessments

Preferred Experience

  • Experience teaching US students — essential
  • Familiarity with CCSS, CBSE and ICSE
  • Experience teaching Grades 6–10
  • Experience with international students
  • Individualized learning/program design
  • Academic writing and standardized assessment preparation
